RRTS stands for Regional Rapid Transit System. It is a high speed rail based mass transport system meant for the people who travel daily or frequently from Delhi to Sonepat or vice versa. The project is already approved by the Delhi and Haryana governments and the work on the project has already started. The rail will connect Delhi, Sonepat and Panipat. The main motives of the project are to provide a fast transport system in NCR and ease congestion on the GT Karnal Road between Panipat and Delhi as a survey suggested that 50% of the traffic on this stretch of GT Karnal Road is of cars of the people traveling daily from Sonepat and Panipat to Delhi and vice versa.

RRTS will be electric trains running at high speeds of up to 200 km/h that runs on tracks which are either underground or elevated above street level. The trains will of high capacity and will run at high frequency of about 10 minutes cycle. This project is to enhance the NCR planning and will reduce the ever increasing pressure of migrating population to Delhi giving rise to infrastructure problems in the national capital of India. The RRTS is planned to provide excellent linking to other transport systems such as metro in Delhi and road transport in Delhi, Sonepat and Panipat.

The RRTS will have stations at Panipat city, Samalkha, Gannaur, Murthal, Rai, Kundli, Narela, Mukarba chowk and Kashmiri gate. DIMTS which is assigned to conduct the survey for feasibility of the project has determined that RRTS should have starting and ending points on this route at Kashmiri Gate, Delhi and IOCL complex, Panipat. This corridor will be an elevated corridor of around 103 kilometers. The nonstop traveling time from Delhi to Panipat will be of around 45 minutes and with stops it will take around 60 minutes. This type of system is already up and running in countries like South Africa, France, Japan, UK and Sweden.

Besides easing of traffic and infrastructural load in Delhi, the project will also enhance the property scenario in Sonepat drastically. This project along with many other projects such as metro connectivity and KMP Expressway will attract people to Sonipat for residential and business purposes which will also boost the economy and job opportunities in Sonipat. The project is slated to be completed till 2016 and people of Sonipat are waiting for this eagerly.
